Nest | The iPhone of Thermostats

Nest is a revolutionary new thermostat from among others, a couple minds behind Apple's iPod. At first sight it's no question that it has a clean and simple design right down to the packaging, just like Apple is oh so well known for. Beyond the cool factor is the brains of it though. It's described as the only thermostat to improve with time. It actually learns how you live and follows your schedule to help you save energy by turning the thermostat up or down automatically. Pretty interesting.

Of course it also offers an iPhone app so you can control it while you're away if you need to. Example, you're getting back into town and want to turn the AC on before you get there. Nest has built-in Wi-Fi so you can actually control it from anywhere inside the home as well, upstairs, down, etc.

It's easy to install to, it simply screws right into where your old thermostat sits. If you can switch out a light fixture, than you can do this.

Design + Build - what does that mean???

In a recent newsletter I sent out, I explained what design + build meant for Jordan Iverson Signature Homes. What is full service? Why is it a benefit? Why should you care? I thought I'd post some of that info on the blog as well as some of you aren't subscribed to the free newsletter.

I won't explain too much here, cause it's broken down in the infographic above and it's also on my website to view + print, but I will say that I'm more than happy to answer any
questions about it that aren't clear. One of the greatest benefits is the
close comminication and efficiency between the design side and the
construction of the home. Having one design + build source can
absolutely help save money because of streamlined communication and efficiency of having one office to talk with for all of the design and construction changes.

Speaking of design + build, floor plans are nearly completed for next years Tour
of Homes project! It will be a hillside home with mountain views and under a
minute to shopping and restaurants. It is going to be listed for sale at a
price to be determined. If you want to keep updated regularily on this and

Houzz - a great start for inspiration!

If you're in search of a great site to find design inspiration, from interior design to outdoor spaces, pools and exterior details then Houzz.com is a great site to check out. What I like most about the site is the quality of the photos and the search tools. Whatever style of home or type of space you're looking for can be searched for very efficiently. They break down categories by the style you're looking for, whether eclectic, modern, traditional, asian, etc. It's also categorized by the type of space you're looking for and you can even search for local professionals by metro areas, including builders, interior designers, architects, pool contractors and photographers.

I always send new clients to this site to create what Houzz calls IdeaBooks. This way after an initial client meeting, they can add photos of styles or details that they like. They get organized in various ideabooks that can then be shared via email so I can see the vision they might have for their new home.

Last but not least, Houzz offers a free iPad and iPhone app that showcases thousands of high quality photos on the go with access to all your ideabooks and inspiration.

Clean + Modern freestanding tub options for your bathing pleasure.

Below are three, modern and clean lined free standing tub options from Wetstyle. If you like the concept of having something similar to the freestanding claw foot tubs from the past, then this might be for you. I came across this company at KBIS 2011 (Kitchen + Bath show) in Vegas and was impressed by all of the product lines they carry. The 2nd tub below shows just one of their Image-In products. In this series they apply a matte finish against the typical high gloss finish to show various distinct patterns to make the tub even more of a focal point. As you can see, each of their fixtures are very simplistic and offer geometric lines that tie in nicely with modern decor. I snapped this shot today from the homesite of a project breaking ground next week. Mountain, Lake & Forrest views. Not bad at all. This is the first of 3 homes starting over the next few months with pretty outstanding views throughout Lane County. Oregon really is a beautiful place.

Functional workstation design ideas

In today's home designs, a home office has become a much desired room in a new home. Not every home has the space for this though. The photos below, show two smaller homes I designed that still offer a completely functional workstation. In both cases, they sit in a fairly central hub of the home, but still are tucked into the space enough to allow focused work to be done. They also serve perfectly well as homework and computer stations. The drawers offer filing storage and plenty of additional storage for a desktop computer tower, cords, media, etc. Both of these are also pre-wired for ethernet and whole house networking, so the computer can connect to the rest of the home and act as a media server to stream audio/video to different locations. Just another, practical, functional and efficient design element that can be included in your home with a little forethought and planning.

Square Soaking Tub from Kohler

I've been looking into installing a tub like this for a quite a while. Like usual, I've got to either create something completely custom or search and search until I find the right product to let me complete my vision. So glad I came across this tub from Kohler. I love the idea of having a deep soaking tub like this and having it sunk into the floor, instead of having to crawl over the edge or up steps like most standard tubs. I also love the spa feel it has. Kohler offers 2 models of the Underscore Cube bath. One, a soaking model and the other a BubbleMassage bath. The massage bath has 122 staggered air jets and 18 levels of air flow for a totally custom spa experience. Both can be installed as a drop in or undermount. They have a really clean look that could fit into many different decors. I'll definitely be using one of these in an upcoming project, hopefully soon!

A Bamboo Sink + a Sink for Entertainers

One of the companies I enjoyed visiting at the KBIS 2011 show was Lenova. They offer a large range of high end, designer sinks for all kinds of spaces and decor. Two of my favorite were by far the Bamboo Kitchen Sink and the Entertainer Sink.

The first, the bamboo sink, speaks for itself and looks amazing in person.

I really liked the functionality of the Entertainer Sink also. It's perfect for an island application and can transform to function in different ways for different occasions as seen below. From chiling wine and a bar area to a condiment station to even being used as a cleaning station after entertaining.

S-Box - it's like a dumbwaiter for your kitchen knives, etc...

This was easily one of my favorite finds at the recent Kitchen & Bath show in Las Vegas. It's called the S-Box and it provides a clean, simple solution for organizing, hiding and accessing various items such as kitchen knives, spices, iPods, outlets, keys or even a TV! It fits into the cabinet through the countertop and "pops-up" with the touch of a finger. One of the benefits is that it needs no power or electrical wiring. It's a great way to use space towards the back of an island or even a cabinet that usually goes to waste.

2 Showcase Homes to View from Iverson Signature Homes

Time is flying and it's just over a month until I'll have two brand new highly custom homes available to walk through during this years HBA of Lane County Tour of Homes event. This year's Tour will feature at least 16 homes from 13+ builders throughout Lane County.

For a long time there was a big void in the market for clean looking, modern fans. There still isn't an overwhelming amount of options, but my favorite company is easily The Modern Fan Company. The fans they offer are simple, clean, modern and do what they're supposed to do...move air! Here are two of my favorite models that they offer. The Pensi and the Cirrus Hugger for low ceiling applications. Both offer a great look and are actually very fairly priced as well. There are different blade lengths available also depending on the size of the space. They both come in brushed aluminum or a color I'm wanting to try which is a gloss white. Lumens.com Light + Living offers most of The Modern Fan Companies line of fans if you want to check more of them out!

I'm already a big fan of Lumens Lighting + Living (even literally on Facebook), so I was excited to get a call and be interviewed for their first trade partners spotlight in their newsletter! Lumens was and is still my first choice for all of the lighting in my homes. The site is so easy to navigate, the pricing is competitive and the shipping is quick. What drew me to the site at first was how clean and simple it was and they were always featuring lighting that I'd been choosing for my homes already. Check them out!

UofO Campus project in the design phase!

Over the past few months I've been working on another challenging "infill" project. This time it will be in the University of Oregon campus area. It will consist of a stylish, 4 bedroom home and an attached Loft Studio that will both be rented out. There's a ton of behind the scenes work on a project like this and it's been quite a process getting through the site planning stage to actually designing the home. I'm excited though, because the home is now designed and the rest of the process is moving right along!

Navigating the complexities of all of the city and building code requirements is one of most valuable parts of the services I can provide you. If you have a home site you've considered building on, but don't know where to start, just let me know how I can help.

I'll be sure to post progress photos and information on this project. The studio loft will be under 300sf, but include a full bath, living space, full kitchen & deck area. More details to follow!

Carpet Tiles...yes carpet tiles.

I'm a fan of carpet tiles. Many consumers may not be aware that those two objects are even sold together. It's still much more common in a commercial environment, but carpet tiles are growing in popularity for many reasons.

What I like about them, is the design options. They're basically limitless! This makes them especially intriguing for spaces that might be hard to bring a stylish design element into in a simple and affordable way. They are also very easy to install, and just as easy to replace if one of them is permanently stained or ruined. This is one of the biggest benefits, as obviously with wall to wall carpeting, it's much harder to repair a small area.

The two brands I've used are FLOR and Shaw. FLOR definitely has the most options for stylish, quirky, and colorful designs, but Shaw had a lot of options that fit perfectly with the urban style home I used them for recently.

Below is a FLOR example that I staged an urban, townhome with at The 4 @ Lincoln.

I came across these a while back and would love to use them. It's a halogen light bulb in the shape of a diamond. What a creative and inexpensive way to create style with the actual bulb and not the fixture itself. I would like to try these out in an upcoming project. I'm not sure where to buy (the designer's website says coming soon)them and haven't found them in the US yet, but I'm hoping it's soon.

With the amount of fireplaces I blog & Twitter about, I could probably start another blog...but for now, here's a few more contemporary options I've come across that I'd really like to use. All three this time are from Lennox, I actually saw these on display at the International Builder Show and was impressed. Mostly by the small amount of install space they take up. They're less than 8 inches deep! They've also all got really clean lines and a nice, modern gas flame. The efficiency is also nearly 100% as the heat is distributed directly into the living space.

An artful faucet series.

This, Luna faucet line from Graff really caught my eye. I like how unexpected it is, but still has very subtle curving lines. It's more than a faucet, it's actually a piece of art. Very cool.

Here's a few more pics of 1 of the 3 Willamette St. LOFTS in Eugene. The flooring is a Shaw, hardwood Maple with a charcoal finish. The custom, sliding barn doors are finished with chalkboard paint. The "Orbit" light over the dining area is from ZGallerie, The custom, mobile island is on casters to move where you need it. The eco-resin panels in the doors and kitchen cabinets are from 3-Form. I've been busy busy busy...but hope to put up more photos soon! If you're looking for a modern outdoor fireplace with a campfire feel, than this is it. These are 2 great, wood-burning firepit options with a clean/modern style. There aren't a lot of options for something like this so it was nice to run across both of these.

The 1st is the Fire Sense HotSpot Square FirePit which you can buy at Sears

The 2nd option is the TERRA Fire Basket by Blomus and you can find this one online at Lumens.

For the living room area, I chose a bio-ethanol burning fireplace by Anywhere Fireplace, 8" handscraped & distressed Maple hardwood, 50" Panasonic TV, custom built "barn door" sliders with 3-Form eco-resing panels, GUS* Modern couch from Modern in Eugene.

I designed all the living, kitchen, dining, & Master Bath & sky terrace to be upstairs which allows for privacy, sound control, and a light filled, airy space.

A faucet inspired by a penguin?

I just came across these faucets today from the Fluid line from Sustainable Solutions International. They've got some really nice lines and offer something with a lot more style than the typical bath faucet. What I really like though is how they show how each faucet was inspired by a specific object or animal. Definitely check out what they offer. Here's on of my faves...inpsired by a penguin.

Willamette Street LOFTS update!

Everything is still right on schedule and what a crazy schedule it's been. Starting in March and completion in July! All of my subcontractors are doing a great job and it's been quite interesting juggling parking schedules as each home is at different stages of completion. I'm really excited for everyone to see the finishes in each of the 3 homes and I've picked out different flooring, finishes and colors for all 3. July 20th, is coming soon, but I'm still on track to make it!

Leather Flooring from Torlys and EcoDomo

I've been researching leather flooring tiles and plank recently for the new lofts I'm building and it has come down to either Torly's or EcoDomo. Both offer a range of colors and textures and I'm anxious to see how the finished floors will look.

They are both good "green" choices and Torly's uses 100% recycled leather for their product and contain no VOC's, while EcoDomo uses recycled leather as well as hide leather. They claim they are easy maintenance as well and stay clean by vacuuming or sweeping or the occasional use of a special wax as needed.

As far as installation goes, Torly's installs without glue or nails with their "uniclic" system and the Ecodomo recycled collection installs with their "EasyContact" adhesive which allows them to be installed right over drywall, plywood or primed concrete.

Multifunction Dining + Pool Table

Here's a great idea and a stylish one as well. It's a dining room table when not in use, and a fully functional pool table when you're entertaining or ready to play. I really like the clean lines they've gone with. You can find all the various models and options at Fusion Tables. Cole and Son - Woods Wallpaper

I ran across this wallpaper pattern and I'm hoping to use it in my next project at The Willamette Street or Southtowne LOFTS for an accent wall. There's more options and colors available at Cole & Son. It's part of their contemporary II collection of wallpaper. The company has been around since 1873 and is located in London. More to come soon about a few of the details and accents I'm choosing for these new Lofts near downtown Eugene, OR.

Modern and Eco Friendly Fireplaces from Safretti

Here are 2 new bio-ethanol burning fireplaces from Safretti. These specific models are from the Cubica and Curva series. Because they burn green fuel, they can be placed almost anywhere inside the home and are easy to move if needed as they aren't connected to a gas line. I'm loving the design of so many of these new fireplace options. There are finally quite a few options from lots of different companies that offer stylish and clean lined fireplaces without the fake logs. Check back as I'll be posting quite a few more over the next few months.

The Caesarstone Mobile Gallery is a great new iPhone app for builders, designers, or anyone building a new home. I'm already a huge fan of Caesarstone quartz counters so it was great news to see that I could carry the entire portfolio of their color options in the palm of my hand. It also includes a handy surface calculator which very easily estimates the amount of materials you'll need. You can also request samples, email details of the product to clients or bookmark your favorite colors for easy access later.

Minimalist shower head

I really like the design of this. These new Raindance shower heads from Hansgrohe offer 3 innovative new spray modes. From a 10 inch "Rain AIR" spray shower, to a powerful massage setting with multiple jets or Rainflow which mimics a waterfall. It claims to be the first horizontal rain panel. Because it installs flush to the wall, it is also a great fit in a simplistic bathroom design. Hopefully I'll be showing you photos in the near future of an install in a new project!

Portable Fire - The Conmoto HotPot

I know I have a lot of posts about fire, but this is too cool to pass up. This is a new portable fireplace for indoors or outdoors and it's available in a range of colors. It burns a bio-ethanol so it's safe wherever you'd like to add a fire element in or around your home. You can find more at Conmoto

Faucet of the future

Here's a couple cool new faucets from Grohe. It's part of the Ondus collection and has some very minimal and modern color options like black, white, chrome, etc. The light on the right hand side of the upper photo functions as an analog clock when not in use, and tells the temperature of the water when being used.

FLOR meets Putt Putt.

If you haven't heard of FLOR yet, I'm sure you will soon. It's a great flooring product with literally endless design possibilities and it's very easy to install...or even re-install! They have many different FLOR styles, colors, thicknesses, etc. I wanted to share the one shown below though. It's aptly named "Putt up or shut up" and offers a very clever and stylish rug for your living space. Perfect! Disappearing Cooktop

The Fisher & Paykel Izona Cooksurface is a very cool concept bringing style to the kitchen cooktop. The pan supports are hidden when not in use, and raise up when you use a burner. This makes for a very clean look and an easy clean ceramic surface when you're finished cooking. Very cool.

I've been wanting to use one of these SPARK fires for a while now, and I've noticed they just came out with their new "linear burning system". Now I have no choice. There are endless design possibilities with this new system. How about an 8 foot long, open ribbon flame fireplace in your home. 8 feet might be overkill, but it's an option. I'm really looking forward to using this system in the near future! Here's their brochure on it.

Mailboxes with a design sense.

Here's a final finish item that can be often overlooked. The mailbox. While these won't always work with all homes or subdivisions which provide group mailboxes, they are a great touch in many older neighborhoods or new homes when allowed. I found these 2 at Chiasso online. The mailbox on the left I recently installed as the perfect final touch on 2 of the homes I built at The 4 at Lincoln. The clean lines and attached newspaper holder were a perfect fit for the homes and homeowners needs.

Another iPhone App for Designers! I.D. Wood

I'm hoping this will be followed by many more new Apps for Interior Designers, Builders etc.

I.D. Wood is a pretty simple iPhone Application that according to Interior Design Magazine includes over 50 different types of wood. This could be handy when meeting with clients and quickly showing them what options they have for different grain types and natural colors. It also explains the woods durability and sustainability among a lot of other information.

It's that time of the year...the 2009 HBA Lane County Tour of Homes is happening right now! The first weekend was a great success and now there's only 7 days left to tour 19 different homes by 18 local builders. Tour hours are 6-9pm weekdays, and 12-6 this weekend!

I'm featuring my new project at 15th and Lincoln in an established neighborhood in downtown Eugene. Come see the first two of "The 4 at Lincoln" townhomes. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The homes offer a style not typically seen in Eugene and I've already received mulitple comments from people saying it feels liked they've stepped into a home in New York, San Francisco or Seattle.

Also, if you don't come to see the home, you have to at least view all the furnishings and accents throughout the home that came from my favorite local home furnishing store...Modern! All of the furnishings are for sale, so come take a look and see the latest trends and styles in home design and home furnishings.

Both Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore have created iPhone Apps that allow you to snap a picture of any color you find out and about and match it with one of their many paint color options! This is a great tool for designers and home owners who find inspiration on the run!

Innovative Storage & Efficient Design

Efficient & creative use of space has always been a big focus of my home designs. Now more than ever, good, thoughtful design will give you not just a more efficient space, but will also help when it's time to sell.

The above storage space & entertainment center has many funtions. It was designed, not just to elegantly frame the flat panel TV & free up floor space, but also to hide all of the additional electronic equipment, DVD's, and misc. storage. A small infrared sensor is placed on the TV, so the remotes can still control any equipment that may be hidden behind the door. There are many details to think about when building a custom cabinet like this, and I'd

be happy to answer questions about the process.

Because it swings out completely just like a cabinet door, it can also be seen from many different angles if needed. In this room it can even be positioned to be seen outside on the deck area! More photos of the room can be seen on my website.

Wallpaper is cool. Seriously.

Wallpaper is continuing to gain popularity in chic remodels and trendy new construction. The above pattern is called "blackbird" by Cavern wallpaper. It's more of a "wall scene" than wallpaper, but either way they are a lot of cool new patterns popping up here and there.

Another company I came across is Twenty2 and they also have a lot of great options to choose from. With all these new wallpaper options, it can be a fairly simple way to make a great accent wall or transform your room completely.

I'm always on the look for the latest in innovative & clean lined fireplace options and EcoSmart never dissapoints. EcoSmart fires are fueled by Denatured Ethanol, which as their website states is a environmentally friendly, renewable energy. These are a couple of their latest offerings. The first model above is the "Element" and the 2nd is called the "Zeta". The Element uses a Caesarstone shelf to hold the burner. Two of my favorite materials and home design elements in one...Caesarstone quartz and a sleek stainless steel fire feature...perfect! The Zeta is also very striking and is actually made of a combination of plywood, stainless steel and leather...yes leather.

The best part about these, is that they can be placed nearly anywhere as they require no flue, no connection to a fuel supply and they burn clean! They offer many finish options and also a lot of retro fit or remodel options so the design possibilities are nearly limitless.

From Garage to Chic Rec Room!

I wanted to share a few photos of a recently completed total makeover of a large garage/shop area I worked on. I typically focus on highly customized new homes, but most people don't know I will also take on select remodel and interior design projects. Please visit my website for more photos!

The goal for this room was to provide space for a large built-in "theater" area, wet bar, 1/2 bath and recreation room with a woodstove, pool table and air hockey table. The main challenge was working with the orginal lighting locations that were used when it was just a shop area. Another challenge was fitting all of these items into a funtional space without feeling crowded. In the end I created a media space with built-ins, surround sound and a 65" HDTV that was partially enclosed, but was still open to the recreation/game room area. The main recreation room area includes the air hockey and pool tables with ample room for moving around. On the end is a raised woodstove with built-in storage below for firewood and a built-in bench for a reading nook and additional storage. The wet bar uses "Cinder" colored Caesarstone counters with a dry-stack ledgestone veneer as a backsplash.

Karbon is cool

This is the trendy "Karbon" faucet from Kohler. I've seen a couple of these installed and they are pretty eye catching. It basically allows the faucet to be positioned at nearly any angle you would ever need and then some. It's not as fluid a movement as I expected, but I'm still going to use one in a future project nonetheless.

Stylish sinks? Yes please.

One often overlooked area for adding some eye catching design details and added functionality is as simple as an additional island or bar sink. There are many new creative sink designs out there and the above photos show a few from Elkay. The 1st sink shown, is great for entertaining as it can be filled with ice and drinks or condiments can be placed in it. The second design in the shape of a Martini glass is just a fun touch for a wet bar area. The third sink shown features an "island" mounted faucet which turns 360 degrees and blue LED lights for an added wow factor.

I'm a sucker for good design and lighting, so I had to post this one. It's the SOLO pendant light from Re-Surface. I saw this light about a year ago, and have been itching to use one in a design since then. I have them picked out for a residence I'm working on right now and I'm excited to see how they fit into the room. It's obviously not for everyone, but I thought it was a such a simple, yet creative idea.

Done with granite?

If you're looking for something other than Granite as a choice for countertops, I'm going to list a few new materials that I've found and or used. While there is nothing wrong with granite, I've never used it in my designs and prefer some of the other amazing materials out there. With the whole "green" building movement, there are more to choose from all the time! Here's a few of my favorites.

Easily my favorite is Engineered Quartz. This product is nearly maintenance free & is said to be scratch, stain, mold & heat resistant. There are many companies who offer this product, including Caesarstone, Cambria, Zodiaq, Silestone, & HansStone. I've used most of them, but really like the color range that Caesarstone offers. Many of the companies actually offer colors that closely resemble granite, but offer the benefits of an engineered quartz product.
Paperstone is another interesting product and like it's name shows, is made from recycled paper & resin. I've seen it applied and it can be cut and sanded down like wood for some very creative uses and options.
Icestone is a newer product made of recycled glass and cement. This is a very sustainable product and meets many of the "green" building requirements. It has some great color options also and I look forward to using it this year.

As you can see, there are many alternatives to granite, and more becoming available it seems almost monthly. Check back soon for other innovative products & materials you can use in your new home!

The Importance of Well Designed Lighting

So one of the most overlooked items when designing and building a new home is lighting. Unfortunately this is one of the single most important aspects that not only will make your home come to life, but also help you live more efficiently and increase the functionality of the spaces in your new home. Whether it be the main source of light, task lighting, accent lighting, safety lighting, natural lighting, etc. there are many aspects to think of in each home design. Many times in my designs the light fixture itself becomes almost a piece of art or focal point in the design.

The kitchen is one of the most important rooms to focus on lighting not just for preparing meals, but because it is also often the center of attention while entertaining. While there should obviously be ample lighting to fill the main space, there should also be specific task lighting where cooking prep work will be done. Accent lighting in or above cabinets can help add a simple touch of elegance in the room at night.

Natural light is one of the most overlooked and one that I work hard to incorporate into each home design I create. Well positioned windows, and the use of skylights can help save energy and make spaces feel more comfortable and spacious. With correctly placed & sized windows & skylights you will find that you may not even need to turn on the lights during most of the day.

Well positioned lighting can help define spaces and make spaces feel larger than they are. I use thoughtfully planned lighting to actually transform the house at night. The lighting will be used to show the, angles, architectural details and art niches, etc. throughout the home.

Another simple way to help with lighting in a new home is to use dimmers. Dimmers can help not only with energy savings, but easily change the mood of a space very simply. This is a simple tip that should be applied in new construction, but can also be easily upgraded in your existing home!

There are many other details I think about when designing a ligting plan, but these are a few of the most important!
